The symptoms of acid reflux disease are as follows: heartburn, which is characterized by chest pain; inflammation in the mucosa; difficulty in swallowing; cough and hoarseness. These symptoms are felt by the infected person after eating a fatty meal or drinking liquor, when bending, and worse when constantly smoking.

Acid reflux disease is primarily caused by the malfunction of the esophageal sphincter. If there is insufficient supply of the stomach acid, the valve in the stomach responsible for churning up foods to the intestine does not open up. Some of the factors that can trigger acid reflux disease are hiatus hernia, zollinger-elison syndrome, hypercalcemia, scleroderma and systemic sclerosis.

According to paradoxical beliefs, drinking alcohol, tea and coffee can lead to gastro esophageal reflux. But recent studies show that although individuals already infected by this disease can be aggravated by alcohol, tea and coffee, these elements do not cause the disease. Compared to smoking which amplifies the risks of getting the disease, alcohol, tea and coffee had the least impact. But this doesn’t mean that GERD infected people are free to take the beverages stated above. Doctors still suggest avoiding drinking of alcohol in order to shun further aggravation.

Smoking is the chief culprit that causes acid reflux disease. Regular smokers for twenty years are 70% susceptible to acid reflux disease compared to non-smokers. And symptoms of those who already developed the GERD are worsened day by day due to smoking.

The highlight of the research is that great amounts of salts are found to be equivalent to regular smoking in terms of the risk of developing GERD. It is not a common knowledge that table salts can cause acid reflux disease but researchers found out in their studies that people who are constantly using extra salt are 70% at risk to have gastro esophageal reflux disease. Gastroenterologists of New York University Medical Center attested this fact.

Gastro esophageal reflux disease can be diagnosed even by the infected person himself through the appearance of the symptoms. In the occurrence of these symptoms, it is advised to undergo the tests conducted by medical experts to clear doubts of having the disease or to carry out possible treatments.

To treat this kind of disorder, there are varieties of ways possible. It can be cured by prescribed drugs such as antacids, by natural way such as change of diet system, elevation of the head when lying down, or to the utmost is surgery. And of course, it will be best to stop or avoid smoking and drinking alcohol especially to people who are vulnerable to acid reflux disease.

Performance anxiety is a rather common problem (occurring more in men than in women) where the affected individual has anxiety about how well he/she can engage in sexual activity. The debilitating fear of not performing sexually has many consequences: avoidance of sexual encounters, lowered self-esteem, relationship discord and sexual dysfunction.

Once you’ve suffered through one instance of this type of anxiety, chances are that it will escalate because now it’s something that you’ll worry about happening again. This type of anxiety creates some physical conditions that then make things even more difficult. Anytime you become anxious about anything, your body releases chemical intermediaries into the bloodstream. These are called catecholamines and they include hormones like dopamine, noradrenaline and adrenaline. These hormones set off and automatic “fight-flght-or-freeze” response.

This then causes certain “less important” blood vessels to shrink, so that the blood flow to areas that are crucial to immediate survival (the heart, lungs and skeletal muscles) remain stable.

It helps that you know the biology behind what happens emotionally so that you can understand that what you are undergoing is a totally normal (and healthy) reflex that kicks in for survival. Obviously you realize that it’s a problem because it’s occurring at the wrong time.

So what can you do to combat performance anxiety? Well, first of all, the more you worry about combating it, the more you give power to the anxiety. So, what you need to do is concentrate on taking the pressure off of yourself. And, above all, remember there are two of you involved in this situation. Take the time to think of your partner and appreciate what you have. If you concentrate more on her/him and less on yourself, your nervousness is likely to fade away.

Another important fact to keep in mind is that this type of anxiety affects almost everyone at some time or another. It may be just one time or it could be often and in certain situations. But most people have gone through it at least once in their lives. There is nothing wrong with you. You are not a freak of nature and you are definitely not alone. So, try to stay positive and and know that your body is working the way it’s supposed to.

It’s also important to communicate with your significant other and discuss the situation. No need to go overboard but starting to talk about it can actually get you going on a sexual tangent that might bring you back into the right frame of mind.

Remember that when it comes down to it, the power of positive thinking can help you accomplish anything, and if you believe that you will have great sexual relationships, you will. Once you’ve mastered overcoming this anxiety, you will have the confidence to turn your self-fulfilling prophecy into something positive.

The attractiveness of contact lenses remains to improve with the growth of technologically advanced methods for vision correction and for proper handling and maintenance of lenses. They are particularly effective in certain occupations, and are desirable for cosmetic reasons in many others.

The Structure

The corneal lens is made of lightweight, paper-thin plastic about 10 mm. or less in diameter. “Scleral lenses” are larger and are used for special medical conditions and some sports.

When properly fitted, contact lenses “float” on the fluid layer of the eyeball and are held loosely in place by the capillary attraction of the tears and the upper lid. The lens moves with the eye and is centered over the cornea.

Contact lenses have many advantages over framed lenses. Here is the list of some of the benefits:

1. They do not steam up when the wearer goes from the cold outside to a warm room.

2. They are automatically cleaned with each blink of the eyelid.

3. They can be worn safely during sports.

4. They eliminate the need for less attractive lenses.

5. Peripheral vision is increased

6. The incidence of breakage is extremely low.

Some disadvantages and dangers in wearing contact lenses include the following:

1. The adjustment period in learning to use them properly is longer

2. Contact lenses are more expensive than framed lenses

3. Contact lenses can be lost easily such as down the sink drain or in a swimming pool

4. In the event of a chemical splash to the eye, the chemical agent may seep beneath the lens to cause extensive damage before the contact lenses can be removed.

Moreover, in special cases like driving, the wearer of contact lenses should carry a card indicating that he wears contact lenses. This may help in an encounter with the police, if his license happens to be marked “must wear glasses.”

Should he be involved in an accident or become unconscious and unable to remove the lenses, prolonged wearing may be injurious to the cornea.

Briefly, recommendations for the wearers of contact lenses are:

1. Wash hands thoroughly before touching the lenses, whether applying them or removing them

2. Cleanse lenses only with the recommended sterile solution. It should be “noncaustic.”

3. Dry the lenses when they are removed and to be stored

4. Keep the storage kit clean

5. Do not wear lenses beyond the prescribed time. Usually, the maximal average is 10 to 16 hours.

6. Do not wear lenses when sleeping or suffering from an eye infection.

The improper use of contact lenses can cause corneal abrasions and ulcerations, which result from poorly fitted lenses, improper technique in applying or removing the lenses, and insufficient tear circulation under the lenses.

Although the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, precautions and safeguards must still be understood by everybody and not only the wearer of contact lenses.

The contact lenses must be regarded as a medical prosthesis, not a cosmetic device. The care and precaution given to any medical “prosthesis” must be used with contact lenses.

What Are You Hiding? Psychoanalysis and The Unconscious

When you sleep, what do you dream of? Do you dream of enjoyable things like lounging in the beach? Do you dream of being in a situation you’ve never even thought of?

What is psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis is a specific treatment wherein a trained professional, or an analyst, listens to a patient’s thoughts, then formulates and explains the unconscious basis behind the person’s behaviour or condition. In some cases, analysts ask about what the patient dreamt about the previous night and interpret information based on those images. This treatment was founded the man who introduced the concept of unconscious function Dr. Sigmund Freud.

Who is Sigmund Freud?

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and psychologist who started the psychoanalytic school of psychology. He introduced the idea of the unconscious mind and its mechanism of repression. He also said that dreams are the window to a person’s unconscious desires.

The Unconscious Mind

Throughout the evolution of Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, he considered the unconscious mind as a sentient force of will influenced by human drive and yet operating well below the perceptual conscious mind. For Freud, the unconscious is the depository of instinctual desires, needs, and psychic actions. While past thoughts and memories may be deleted from immediate consciousness, they direct the thoughts and feelings of the individual from the realm of the unconscious.

Freud divided mind into the Ego, or the conscious mind, and the two parts of the unconscious: the Id or instincts and the Superego. The id is seen as the source of drives demanding immediate satisfaction, and the superego as internalized parental and social authority, the work of the ego being to mediate the resultant conflicting demands. He used the idea of the unconscious in order to explain certain kinds of neuroses.

Defense mechanism

Freud believed that people develop defense mechanisms to protect the conscious mind from certain aspects of reality that it may have difficulty accepting. Examples of defense mechanisms are: repression, reaction-formation, regression, displacement, and rationalization.

Repression

This is the most commonly manifested defense mechanism among the ones mentioned above. It is the act of excluding desires and impulses from the conscious mind and attempting to hold it in the subconscious. Repression is commonly associated with traumatic or harsh event that happened in the past. But it appears that trauma more often strengthens the memory due to heightened emotional and/or physical sensations.

Dreams

Freud postulated that dreams were wish fulfillments. That it provides a fantasy satisfaction of inner desires that have been pushed back to the unconscious. Freud also said that the unconscious itself is timeless and does not mature. Even as the body and the conscious mind age and mature, our unconscious remains infantile, and demands immediate gratification of its desires.

When you’re asleep, your repressed desires and impulses are relaxed. It doesn’t, however, mean that your inner desires will appear directly in your dreams. Freud said that these desires get filtered by a process he calls “dream work”. He believed there are four kinds of dream work:

Condensation. Multiple thoughts merge into a single symbol in the dream.

Displacement. Inner desires manifest themselves as objects related to it.

Symbolization. Ideas and/or impulses are turned into pictures.

Secondary revision. This is the rational gloss we put on a dream, turning the dream into a manageable story as we remember it.

Freud believed dream interpretation should concentrate on the underlying symbols in the dream, rather than the story of the dream, which he believed to be just a disguise.

As what the late Sigmund Freud said, your dreams are an extension of your innermost desires and wishes. The next time you dream of something, check and see if it has any relevance to what you’re feeling. Your unconscious may already be telling you something.

We must obtain vitamins from natural foods, or dietary supplements in order to sustain life.

When I mention the word vitamin, most people think pill. Thinking pill

brings to mind confusing images of medicine and drugs. Though vita-

mins can and certainly often do the work of both medicine and drugs,

they are neither.

Quite simply, vitamins are organic substances necessaryfor life. Vitamins

are essential to the normal functioning of our bodies and, save for a few

exceptions, cannot be manufactured or synthesized internally. Necessary for

our growth, vitality, and general well-being, they are found in minute quanti-ties in all natural food. We must obtain vitamins from these foods or fromdietary supplements.

What you have to keep in mind is that supplements, which are available

in tablet, capsule, liquid, powder, spray, patch, and injection forms, are stilljust food substances, and, unless synthetic, are also derived from living plantsand animals.

It is impossible to sustain life without all the essential vitamins.

What Vitamins Are Not

Vitamins are neither pep pills nor substitutes for food.

A lot of people think vitamins can replace food. They cannot. In fact, vit-

amins cannot be assimilated without ingesting food. There are a lot of

erroneous beliefs about vitamins, and I hope this book can clear up most

of them.

Vitamins are not pep pills and have no caloric or energy value of

their own.

Vitamins are not substitutes for protein or for any other nutrients, such as minerals, fats, carbohydrates, water—or even for each other!

Vitamins themselves are not the components of our body structures.

You cannot take vitamins, stop eating, and expect to be healthy.

How They Work

Vitamins regulate our metabolism through enzyme systems. A single deficiency can endanger the whole body.

Vitamins are components of our enzyme systems which, acting like spar

plugs, energize and regulate our metabolism, keeping us tuned up and func

tioning at high performance.

Compared with our intake of other nutrients like proteins, fats, and carbo

hydrates, our vitamin intake (even on some megadose regimens) is minuscule

But a deficiency in even one vitamin can endanger the whole human body.

But, you should always remember that supplements are supplements and not replacement of regular and healthy food. Without food, they will not work.

Many people assume a child with ADD will run screaming like a wild banshee through the supermarket, school, or any other inappropriate place they happen to be in; however, that is rarely the case. The term “hyperactive” and ADD are sometimes used interchangeably, but this is not accurate. The true symptoms of ADD may be less obvious than that of the tantrum-thrower in the mall.

Attention Deficit Disorder most often makes itself apparent as extreme inattentiveness. While most children go through spells of lack of concentration, with an ADD child, it actually hinders day to day activities. This is displayed by having a short attention span, being easily distracted, and not paying attention to details, all more so than an average child of the same age. You may notice a child with ADD becoming sidetracked with very little noise or activity that other people may not even notice.

Impulsiveness is another symptom of ADD. A child that interrupts constantly, has an inability to wait their turn, or blurts out answers in class may be exhibiting signs of Attention Deficit Disorder. This characteristic shows a lack of process in action – not thinking before acting. For most people, a thought comes to mind, they consider it, and then choose to act or not act on it. However, with ADD, the idea enters a child’s mind and is almost instantly enacted, with little consideration to consequences. This comes across as the child not being able to control themselves.

Another possible symptom of ADD is hyperactivity. Although this is not present in all children, it is exhibited in many. A child with ADD and hyperactivity may talk excessively, fidget, have a difficult time sitting still, climb or run excessively, and often displays these behaviors at inappropriate times. Most children are active; however, interference with daily life is a sign of a problem.

The key to diagnosing Attention Deficit Disorder is excessiveness in the above characteristics. Almost all children will exhibit these traits occasionally, but they must actually create a difficulty on a regular basis to point to ADD. They must also be inappropriate for the age of the child. Most younger children will be more inattentive, impulsive, or hyperactive; however, with age, these behaviors are usually controlled. For this reason, a child must be compared to other children of the same age to accurately analyze if their actions are excessive.
