Fibroids are one of the most common bening tumors of the female genital tracts. One female out of every four is amenable to uterine fibroids No one is certain accurately about what causes them, but generally they reduce in size after menopause, so estrogen levels may be a main factor. They are primarily associated with peri-menopause- the time before menopause- which is characterized by twelve continuous months in which a woman had no menstruation.Women have the greatest possibility to have fibroids if they are of childbearing age, are African-American, are overweight and / or have not given birth to children.

Fibroids can remain within the body devoid of symptoms.Sometimes females having uterine fibroids can feel long episodes of pelvic pressure at times with pain.They can also lead to frequent urination, excessive vaginal discharge, and bleeding.To confirm the presence of uterine fibroids, the patients may have to undergo an ultrasound test.

Treatment of the uterine fibroids is not necessary but since symptoms can be abrupt on some women, they choose to have their fibroids treated.Treatments include drugs (pain relievers or medications to reduce the size of the fibroids), surgery (hysterectomy,myomectomy, endometrial ablation etc) and uterine fibroid embolization (UFE).

Aside from the treatment, exercise helps certify regular ovulation as irregular ovulation seems to worsen fibroids.In addition to that there are reports that state eating less pork and red meat shrinks fibroids and some women have reported some success with following a vegetarian diet.

Right here I would like to add that fibroids are not malignant and cannot metastasize, so you shlould not be afraid at all.

Poor eating habits

Diet that is high in saturated fat tends to elevate cholesterol. Saturated fats are found mostly in foods that come from animals. When a company enters into a contract with an HMO, employee satisfaction as well as company money is on the line. Health costs are rising annually, and employee health care is a major expense for most businesses. The following tips will help you select the best health plan for your business.

When companies out-source services, they usually monitor the supplier to ensure that it consistently supplies the goods or services which are specified in the contract. When dealing with HMOs, however, many companies ignore this basic business practice. At least once a year, compare your HMO with nationwide HMO performance measurements.

To compare HMOs, use the Health Plan Employer Data Information set, or HEDIS, available from the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA) in Washington, D.C. This database has guidelines for comparing HMO performance in approximately 60 categories. Nearly all HMOs provide their own HEDIS data to prospective clients. If an HMO refuses, this is a sign of inferior performance.

Check to be sure the HMO is accredited by either the NCQA or the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations in Oak Brook Terrace, Illinois. Both of these organizations have rigorous standards for HMOs. While evaluations are paid for by participating HMOs, one in eight tested so far by the NCQA has received a failing grade.

If you are still confused by the parameters of the HEDIS report, it may be worthwhile to hire a healthcare consultant to teach company managers how to evaluate health plans. This usually costs $5,000 to $10,000.

Several important criteria are used to compare HMOs. The first is the medical-loss ratio, which refers to the ratio of HMO medical expenses to the total premiums collected. A ration of less than 80% denotes an inefficient health plan which spends too much on marketing or administration. Also, be wary of an HMO with a medical-loss ration which fluctuates widely from year to year. A sudden decrease may mean that the health plan has started to market itself more aggressively, perhaps due to a sudden loss of members. A sudden upward surge may mean that the HMO has incurred unexpected medical expenses which may lead to insolvency. However, new HMOs generally have slightly more unstable medical-loss ratios than those which have been in business for many years.

Disenrollment ratios refer to the percentage of employees who have discontinued the health plan. Some turnover always occurs as employees change jobs or move away; however, higher than average losses may indicate customer dissatisfaction. Disenrollment rates of greater than 10%, or a steady rise in disenrollment rates, invite further investigation.

The best medicine is preventative medicine. Be sure to check for such services as childhood immunizations, prenatal care, mammography and screening for high cholesterol. A lack of coverage for these services can lead to higher costs in the future. Also, ask whether the plan covers any alternative therapies, which are becoming increasingly popular with the public.

Find out what access the HMO offers patients seeking primary care physicians. Don’t be impressed by a long list of affiliated physicians; the key is to check for practitioners who are actively accepting new patients. Many HMOs have a large provider directory of family physicians, internists and pediatricians, most of them with full practices. A plan which confines patients to a few available doctors is likely to generate patient complaints. Many employees may already have personal physicians who are familiar with their medical histories, and will resent being forced to switch to an HMO-approved doctor.

Check whether the available physicians are close by, whether they provide services in evenings or on weekends, and what percentage are board-certified.

Get references from existing customers. Widespread dissatisfaction, despite good statistics, is a sign that you will probably be unhappy with the HMO as well. HMOs frequently conduct customer-satisfaction surveys, which should be done by an independent organization so the results can be verified. Sometimes “inessential” features, such as a live receptionist rather than automated voice mail system, or a good patient-education resource center, bring a great increase in customer happiness.

The best HMO isn’t necessarily the cheapest, but rather the one which most closely matches a company’s needs.

Rosacea is a chronic, lifelong skin condition that affects (most often) the face. The disease is common: approximately 1 in every 20 Americans has rosacea. Women are affected more often in the early stages (flushing and erythrosis), but more men progress to the advanced stages and rhinophyma is seen almost exclusively in men over 40 years of age.

Rosacea is characterized by various skin disorders and sufferers must contend with skin flushing, erythrosis (reddish or purplish discoloration of the skin), teleangiectasia (permanent enlargement of small blood vessels), papulopustular rosacea (papules are small, red, raised bumps; pustules are similar but they contain pus) or rhinophyma (enlarged, red, swollen nose) and for many people, some of these signs and symptoms are very common; approximately 94% of people with rosacea have flushing. These attacks last from a few minutes to several hours, and the flushing seen in rosacea is intermittent in nature. The disease, to a greater or lesser degree, is progressive, and the more pronounced skin lesions will usually follow sporadic episodes of flushing.

The exact cause of rosacea has not been determined, but here are many theories. Exposure to the sun may be one factor, and exposure to the sun can precipitate acute episodes of flushing. Another possible cause are skin mites, Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis. These tiny insects usually live at the base of hair follicles. They are often found on the faces of people with rosacea, and it has been suggested that they may initiate an inflammatory reaction (Inflammation dilates blood vessels and this contributes to the flush, and it may also damage the blood vessels, causing them to be permanently dilated). Infection with the common bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, has also been suggested as a cause. There may also be genetic defects in the vasculature of the skin that causes hem to become easily – and permanently – dilated.

The signs and symptoms of rosacea are not dangerous, but they can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and disfiguring. (However, rosacea can affect the eyes. Approximately 3% to 58% of patients with skin changes will have eye problems and rosacea keratitis can lead to blindness). Yet although there is no cure for rosacea, the disease can be managed. Topical medication, oral medications and laser therapy can all be used to control flushing and to remove some of the skin blemishes, swollen blood vessels and discoloration. However, it would be far more preferable to prevent outbreaks of flushing and the development of erythrosis and papulopustular lesions. It is well known that there are certain factors – sunlight, stress, heat – that can trigger rosacea signs and symptoms, and food has been identified as a trigger.

What foods have been implicated as causes of rosacea signs and symptoms? The list is long, and there is obviously individual variations in susceptibility: high doses of B6 and B12, chocolate, tomatoes, hot beverages, hot sausage, red pepper, black pepper, vinegar, paprika, white pepper, garlic, wine, hard liquor, beer, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, milk, citrus fruits, eggplants, avocadoes, spinach, raisins, figs, bananas, and marinated meat.

Why do these foods exacerbate rosacea? No one knows for sure, and given the fact that the exact cause of rosacea hasn’t been clearly determined, that’s not surprising. However a look at the pathophysiology of rosacea may provide some clues.

The flush that is so common in people with roseacea is caused by dilation of the small blood vessels of the face. Why this occurs is not certain. The blood vessels may be genetically weak, or they may be damaged by years of exposure to the sun. There may also be an increase in the number of blood vessels, or there may be damage to the walls of the blood vessels. Whatever the cause, the blood vessels (which in the face are very close to the surface) dilate. Many of the foods that trigger flushing attacks most likely do so by increasing body temperature, and in order to lose body heat, blood vessels dilate. Others may cause flushing by stimulating the release of histamine. This is a naturally occurring substance that dilates blood vessels and some foods, e.g. beer and citrus fruits may stimulate the release of histamine.

Obesity

From ages 1-10

Staying healthy and starting healthy habits begins the minute we are born. What can we do for those at these young and tender ages? Mothers can begin by breast-feeding. They can introduce healthy items at meal times when babies are ready for solid food. Required immunizations need to be kept up to date. From birth through young childhood, the intake of a chewable tablet vitamin supplement must become part of their daily routine. Eat healthy foods. Avoiding unhealthy fats and consuming raw fruits and vegetables go a long way in staying nutritionally stable.

Watch your dieting habits. While there are many diet plans out there, the simplest is almost always more effective. Watching portion size and the ingredients (fat, calories and sugar) in foods will often net the best weight loss results. It’s wise to note that losing or maintaining your desired weight means one thing, there needs to be more calories burned than what has been consumed. This can be accomplished with:

Exercise. Whether you are a regular attendee at the local gym or you workout at home, there are certain types of exercise that will benefit you the most. One exercise routine must raise your heart rate (cardiovascular health). Another should include free-weights or weight lifting in some form (bone health and strengthening). Additionally, walking, dancing and swimming can tone the body. Weight loss in pounds alone will make you happy when you step on the scales but most women want that loose skin (abdomen, underarms, and thighs) to tighten up as well. If you just can’t find the time to exercise, try these activities:

Park in the last open parking space far away from the storefront and walk.

At home, grab some large juice bottles that have the indented areas for carrying or milk jugs and do some curls.

Make an appointment at age 39 for your first mammogram.

Keep your mental health a priority. Talk to a professional therapist if you need some guidance or direction.

Avoid unhealthy relationships. If you are being abused in any manner by anyone, seek help

While all these “tips” for the age 20-39 group will keep a woman in optimum health, most of these need to be implemented and continued into the later years as well.

Ages 40-100

These are the years that many women claim that they become wiser. Some even claim that it is the best time of life they ever experienced. The tips for the 20-39 age groups hold true for women beyond 40; some exceptions would include the advice on folic acid intake, the amount of weight carried in the free-weight exercise routines, the limitations of exercise that may create falls, accidents or injuries and the PAP tests. Regular PAP test examinations usually ceases around 80 years of age but ask your doctor first.

From ages 40-50 a woman can expect pre-menopausal symptoms. Again, the changes that occur in any woman’s life can never be set at a certain age. There are women that may never have any disrupting symptoms of menopause. Other women may begin menopause at age 40 others might be near 50. Some women may become post-menopausal at age 45 and others at age 52-55. No matter what the age of onset or completion, menopause happens. Be sure to talk to your doctor about remedies for the symptoms of menopause. There are hormone replacement therapies (HRT) as well as some natural supplements to ease menopause. Taking soy isoflavones, in capsule form, have recently been regarded by some women as helpful in decreasing their hot flashes.

While awareness of the importance of calcium and its consumption should be well established by age 15, many older women still don’t find it a concern. Osteoporosis (bone weakness) can begin to occur as early as age 35. By the time you get into this age group of 40+ and you haven’t been caring for your calcium needs, you might expect by age 60 to see the results in your body. We have all seen the women with humps below their neck at the spine. We have seen the stooped walks and heard of women in this age group having falls that break their hips and other bone structures. As more consumers turn to massage therapy for medical conditions and to relieve stress, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) wants to share some tips with the public to help them find a massage therapist who is trained and qualified.

Consumers should ask the following questions of a massage therapist before getting a massage:

– Are you licensed to practice massage?

– Are you a member of the American Massage Therapy Association?

– Where did you receive your massage therapy training?

– Are you Nationally Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork?

Trained massage therapists are happy to share their credentials with clients. AMTA professional members have demonstrated a level of skill and knowledge through education and/or testing and are required to meet continuing education standards to retain membership. Consumers can rest assured that their massage therapist has met minimum education and training standards if he or she is a member of AMTA. Although, we suggest a massage therapist that is a member of AMTA, there are many excellent massage therapists that are not members. Just be sure to view their credentials.

People today look to massage therapy for more than pampering. In fact, preliminary results from AMTA’s annual consumer survey suggest consumers seek massage for medical conditions more than just because it feels good. And, other healthcare providers often refer their patients to massage therapists.

Recent research shows that massage provides relief for chronic low back pain, eases pain and muscle spasms following bypass surgery, and is effective in treating lymphedema, a condition common among mastectomy survivors.
