Paper Crafts: Scrapbook and Greeting Card Basics

| Articles | January 10, 2013

Paper crafts are a popular pastime right now. Scrapbooking is a fun way to display pictures and chronicle family history. Other paper crafts include making greeting cards and even making hand made papers.

When getting started at paper crafts, it is easy to spend a lot of money! Go easy at first until you know what sort of paper craft products you are likely to use. For instance, you may find that you love using stickers in scrapbooks, but rarely use your rubber stamps. If this is the case, you would be better off spending more on stickers and less on rubber stamps for your paper crafts.

Almost everyone has at least some of their photographs stored somewhere in a shoe box. Scrapbooks are a great way to get those photos out where people can enjoy them. You will need a loose leaf binder, some plastic page protectors, and some colored cardstock for starters. Many paper crafts experts insist on only archival quality materials. Check the labels as you buy. Most paper products, even the cheaper ones, are labeled “acid-free,” which means that it shouldn’t fade or otherwise deteriorate if stored for a long time. Sunlight will bleach almost anything, but your paper crafts should not be out in the sunlight very often.

To start a scrapbook you have several options. You can select photos that all relate to one event, such as a trip or a child’s participation in sports. This type of scrapbook will be short, but can be designed around a theme. This is a good choice if your photos are not in a jumble. If they are, then you may wish to choose 3 or 4 photos around a general theme, and change the theme for each page. You may want to include some 2 page spreads in your scrapbook.

Attach your photos to the cardstock with double-sided tape squares or a gluestick. Then it’s time to decorate the page with stickers, paper shapes, or rubber stamped designs. In addition, you can use a colored gel pen to write dates, names, and other highlights about the activities in the pictures.

Other items are available in paper crafts stores. These includes die cuts, which are pieces of paper already cut into shapes and objects. There are also special scissors that cut paper with an interesting edge. A pair of the type called “deckle” scissors is very useful for making elegant looking scrapbook pages, greeting cards, and other paper crafts. If you also have an old pair of pinking shears that are too dull to cut fabric, you can use those for cutting out shapes and photos.

Many paper crafts enthusiasts begin with scrapbooking, but then branch out to making their own greeting cards. Greeting cards may or may not have an original poem written on the inside. A simple “Happy Birthday,” “Get Well Soon,” or even just “Hi!” is enough to brighten someone’s day, so don’t worry about not being a good enough writer to make your own greeting cards. Rubber stamps often make beautiful greeting cards. You can even attach small ribbons, beads, and other items to hand made cards. A handmade card is sure to please anyone, whether they are interested in paper crafts or not.

Other Factors in Garden Creation

So now you’ve picked out what type of garden you will have, what the

location will be, and what kind of fertilizer you need, now is the time to

really get started in choosing your garden environment. First you’ll want

to choose what your garden barriers will be. What will separate your

garden from the rest of the world? Next you’ll want to choose the

decorations and support for your plants. Often some kind of metal mesh is

necessary to keep your plant standing up. You will also want to choose how

much soil and fertilizer to buy, and how to arrange all the plants in your

garden.

Choosing a border is actually a fairly important step in getting your

garden started. It might not actually affect the well-being of the plants,

but having a garden is a fairly aesthetic ordeal for many people anyways.

So usually you will want to choose between metal and wood. You can stack

up boards around the perimeter of your garden, and give it a rather nice

cabin look. If you’re looking for a more modern look, you can obtain some

metal lining at your local home improvement store for rather cheap, and

installation is medium difficulty.

Finding something nice-looking to support your plants can be a little bit

more challenging. Sometimes a short metal pole can work well, but often

for plants such as tomatoes you will need a wire mesh for it to pull

itself up on. You can find these at any gardening store, usually

pre-shaped in a sort of cone shape ideal for plants. The plant just grows

up through it, and usually it will last until the plant is grown enough to

support itself. After that you can take a pair of wire-cutters and just

snip it free.

Deciding how much soil to buy can be slightly easier. Look up information

on your plants and find out the ideal soil depth. Then dig out that much

from your garden, take the measurements, and find out the exact amount of

cubic feet of soil that you will need. Go to the store and buy it,

preferably adding on a few bags just so you can replenish the supply if it

compresses or runs out. If you live in an area where the ground is rough,

dry, and barren of nutrients, then you might even want to add a few inches

of depth to the original recommendation.

Arranging the plants is rather important to the success of your garden.

I’m not talking about some kind of feng-shui thing, but depending on your

watering, some plants might hog all the water and leave the other plants

high and dry. Some plants have longer roots than others, and are more

aggressive in the collection of water. If you place one of these plants

next to a plant with weaker, shorter roots, it will quickly hijack the

water supply for itself, and choke out the other plant.

I hope I’ve led you to realize that placement isn’t the only important

thing about a garden. There are many other factors that might not seem

very significant, but spending a proper amount of time considering them

could change the outcome of your garden. So if you’re working on building

a garden, use and reference you can (the library, the internet, and

magazines) to look in to some of the factors I’ve mentioned.

Organic Gardening

| Articles | January 6, 2013

Organic gardening is the exact same as regular gardening except that no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides are used. This can make certain aspects difficult, such as controlling disease, insects, and weeds. Organic gardening also requires more attention to the soil and the many needs of plants.

Organic gardening starts with the soil. Gardeners must add organic matter to the soil regularly in order to keep the soil productive. In fact, compost is essential to the healthiness and well being of plants grown organically. Compost can be made from leaves, dead flowers, vegetable scraps, fruit rinds, grass clippings, manure, and many other things. The ideal soil has a dark color, sweet smell, and is full of earthworms. Some soil may need more natural additives than regular compost can give, such as bonemeal, rock phosphates, or greensand. A simple soil test will tell you the pH balance and which nutrients you will need to use.

One thing that makes even gardeners that are very serious about organic gardening reach for pesticides is insects on their plants. The best way to defend plants against insects is to take preventative measures. One thing that can be done is to make sure plants are healthy and not too wet or dry because insects usually attack unhealthy plants and if healthy, they can often outgrow minor insect damage. A variety of plant types is a good idea to keep pests of a particular plant type from taking out the entire garden.

Perhaps the best way to defend against insects is to make your garden enticing to insect predators, such as ladybugs, birds, frogs, and lizards. You can do this by keeping a water source nearby or by growing plants that attract insects who feed on nectar. Other ideas are sticky traps, barriers, and plant collars. There are some household items that prevent against insects too, like insecticidal soaps, garlic, and hot pepper.

To avoid plant disease in organic gardening, choose disease resistant plants and plant them in their prime conditions. Many diseases will spread because of constant moisture and bad air circulation, so the site of your garden and the way it is watered can help ensure against diseases.

Weeds can be an annoying and frustrating part of organic gardening. Organic mulch can act as a weed barrier, but for even better protection put a layer of newspaper, construction paper, or cardboard under the mulch. Corn meal gluten will slow the growth of weeds if spread early in the season before planting, as does solarization. There’s also the old-fashioned art of hoeing and hand pulling that always works. Your best bet in weed prevention is persistence. Mulch well and pull and hoe what you can; after a few seasons you can beat the weeds for good.

Organic gardening is an excellent way to assure that your plants will be free and clear of all pesticides and, if taken care of properly, will be as healthy as possible. Organic gardening may take a little more time and care than regular gardening, but after gardeners get the hang of it and figure out all the quirks of their garden, it is definitely worth the extra time.

Optimizing Your Garden for Drought or Water Conservation

| Articles | January 5, 2013

Living in Colorado and being a gardener has been rather stressful in the

past few years, as this state has been undergoing a rather severe drought.

The city is imposing watering restrictions which are not giving enough

water to lawns and plants. I’ve had to renovate my garden to make it more

water efficient. Now, because of the techniques I’ve employed, I’m the

only one in my neighborhood with a garden that isn’t completely brown. So

if you live in an area that is going through a drought or if you just want

to save water, I suggest you use some of these techniques as well.

First, I took out all my plants. The soil I was using didn’t retain water

very well, so I had to water about twice as much as necessary in order to

get it to actually absorb into the roots. If you have this same problem,

you can fix it by loading the soil up with lots of compost. This not only

prevents water from escaping, but encourages the plant’s roots to be

healthy and able to survive more.

Once I was done optimizing the soil for my new low water consumption plan,

I was ready to replace all my plants. I decided that the placement of all

my plants would reflect the amount of water necessary to keep them alive.

All the plants that don’t require much water I placed in on one side of my

garden, and then just progressed in the amount of required water to the

other side of the garden. As a result of my new arrangement, I don’t have

to waste water on plants that don’t need it as much.

The installation of a drip irrigation system was another move on my part

that reduced the amount of water I needed to fully water my garden. The

great thing about these systems is that they constantly drip into your

plants, so that every single drop is absorbed. With traditional watering

systems, usually the roots get too overwhelmed with the sheer amount of

water in the soil. Thus, lots just seeps right past. This is all taken

care of with the drip system.

If you still seem to need more water than you can supply to your garden,

you might consider which plants you could replace with less water

dependent plants. If you want a good shrub that doesn’t use up more than

its share of water, look for Heavenly Bamboo. It is not only tolerant of

droughts, but looks rather decorative in any garden. Herbs such as

rosemary are useful in preparing meals, and are rarely thirsty.

If you’re trying to find flowers that will still be lush and beautiful

despite the lower amounts of water, look for penstemon varieties like

Garnet, Apple Blossom, Moonbeam, and Midnight. You can attract

hummingbirds and butterflies with varieties like Cosmos and Yarrow. The

best part about all these plants is that they don’t look rugged and

withstanding, but they sure are. Your neighbors wont be saying “Look at

them, they downgraded their plants just to withstand the drought. What

chumps!” Instead they will be marveling over how you keep your flowers so

beautiful in the midst of the watering regulations.

One of my favorite drought resistant plants is the Lavender plant. I could

go on for pages about it. A large group of Lavender plants looks

unbelievably gorgeous in your garden, and hardly requires any water to

flourish. Pineapple sage is another personal favorite. It is a 2+ foot

shrub that smells strangely of pineapple. It’s another major attracter of

hummingbirds, and the leaves are also useful to add taste to drinks.

So if you are in the position I was, and you’re dealing with a drought and

perhaps watering regulations, I suggest you try some of the things I’ve

mentioned. Even if you’re just trying to conserve water or be generally

more efficient with it, I think you’ll still be able to benefit.

Old School Crystal Jewelry

| Articles | January 3, 2013

Crystal jewelry has come a long way since the time when Daniel Swarovski I introduced his innovative cutting machine. It has made its way into the comforts of homes and offices giving each room and area a sparkling ambiance that makes the occupant longing for more. It ahs been part of a series of significant happenings and events in the lives of so many people.

It has walked the aisle so many times ravishing the crowd with its beauty that blends well with that of the bride. It surely has and continues to leave the market in shear awe. But surely the jewelry cannot stand alone. Without the elegance of the crystal your precious jewelry is just an ordinary accessory. So with this in mind let’s turn on the old school music and take a peak of how crystals made their way in the lives of so many people.

It was around the second half of the 17th century when a man named George Ravenscroft who was a glassmaker by profession paved the way for the birth of pure lead crystals. Ravenscroft was looking for means to produce glassware that can boast of an improved clarity and luster. He succeeded upon creating a molten mixture that composed of lead oxide. In this manner he was able to alter the properties of glass drastically.

Certain changes included higher glass clarity and the refractive index of the glass came blowing off the charts. He also noted that there was a remarkable increase in the weight of the glass and it became more malleable that an opportunity to mold it easier without breaking it presented itself. This brought about an instant bloom in the fame of Ravencroft’s glass. It easily spread in the markets of Europe and as far as that of America.

Moving further back into ancient times, the purpose of crystals was not only as accessories or jewelries. Crystals were associated with mystic powers and thus with the properties of healing all sorts of ailments and disorders. This is actually where the belief of crystals being associated with meditation and inner balance. Crystals were placed in special areas of the house and were readily worn during times of special events such as quests and battles.

Historians and archeologists have concluded that crystals were not only used for adornment purposes but more so inclined with that of the spiritual realm. A prehistoric monument proves how crystals were used by early civilization in order to communicate with nature and the after life. This monument is a solar temple known to history as the Newgrange. This is actually a sacred passage in the Boyne Valley found in Ireland.

This grave was built way earlier than the pyramids. Its orientation was done so as to facilitate sun streams to enter through the long tunnel entrance which is estimated to be about seventy feet. One noticeable feature that presented crystals was the white quartz that covered the roof. This was said to be made in honor of the White Goddess.

Other historical fact showcased crystals as common mediums utilized in healing and spiritual ceremonies that were done by the early settlers in South America. In the Far East, quartz crystal balls were usually associated with the essence of a powerful mythological creature which is the dragon. Back in ancient India chakras or energy center said to be located in various areas around the body is also tagged with crystals. This is where meditation methods of placing crystals across the body trace its root.

No matter how far crystal jewelry has reached in the modern day its old school background will surely be carved along with it as it continuously make longer and better strides.

Your Recommended Daily Allowance for Relaxation

| Articles | January 2, 2013

Stress is the curse of living in modern times. Everyone suffers from stress. And the stress we suffer takes a heavy toll on our bodies, emotions and minds.

Feeling stressed out, worn out by fatigue or just simply having a miserable day, the best thing to do is relax.

Watching television may be a form of relaxation for some, but is not a recommended method by experts. When we watch TV we are bombarded with commercials, ads, sounds and images. So how do we achieve relaxation? If there are thousands of ways we can get stressed, one of them is not meeting deadlines, there are also many ways we can relax.

In recent studies, experts have determined that heart disease is linked to anger and irritability is linked to mental stress. Too much stress brings about ischemia that can lead to or cause a heart attack. Relaxation takes on added importance in light of this matter. Managing your anger and attitude is significant to heart health, and relaxation can help you manage stress.

One way of relaxation is transcendental meditation. Recent studies have also shown that this method might reduce artery blockage, which is a major cause for heart attack and stroke. People practice transcendental meditation by repeating uttering soothing sounds while meditating, this is to achieve total relaxation. The researchers found that practitioners of transcendental meditation significantly reduced the thickness of their arterial wall compared with those who didn’t practice transcendental meditation.

Another study on another method of relaxation, acupuncture, seems to reduce high blood pressure by initiating several body functions for the brain to release chemical compounds known as endorphins. Endorphin helps to relax muscles, ease panic, decrease pain, and reduce anxiety.

Yoga is also another method for relaxation and may also have similar effects like acupuncture. In another study, participants were subjected to several minutes of mental stress. Then they were subjected to various relaxation techniques, such as listening to nature sounds or classical music. Only those who did Yoga significantly reduced the time it took for their blood pressures to go back to normal. Yoga is a form of progressive relaxation.

Breathing is one of the easiest methods to relax. Breathing influences alamost all aspects of us, it affects our mind, our moods and our body. Simply focus on your breathing, after some time you can feel its effects right away.

There are several breathing techniques that can help you reduce stress.

Another easy way to achieve relaxation is exercise. If you feel irritated a simple half-hour of exercise will often settle things down. Although exercise is a great way to lose weight, it does not show you how to manage stress appropriately. Exercise should also be used in conjunction with other exercise method.

One great way of relaxation is getting a massage. To gain full relaxation, you need to totally surrender to the handling and touch of a professional therapist.

There are several types of massages that also give different levels of relaxation.

Another method of relaxation is Biofeedback. The usual biofeedback-training program includes a 10-hour sessions that is often spaced one week apart.

Hypnosis is one controversial relaxation technique. It is a good alternative for people who think that they have no idea what it feels like to be relaxed. It is also a good alternative for people with stress related health problems.

Drugs are extreme alternatives to relaxation. They are sometimes not safe and are not effective like the other relaxation methods. This method is only used by trained medical professionals on their patients.

These relaxation techniques are just some of the ways you can achieve relaxation. Another reason why we need to relax, aside from lowering blood pressure in people and decreasing the chances of a stroke or a heart attack, is because stress produces hormones that suppress the immune system, relaxation gives the immune system time to recover and in doing so function more efficiently.

Relaxation lowers the activities within the brains’ limbic system; this is the emotional center of our brain.

Furthermore, the brain has a periodic need for a more pronounced activity on the right-hemisphere. Relaxation is one way of achieving this.

Relaxation can really be of good use once a relaxation technique is regularly built into your lifestyle. Choose a technique that you believe you can do regularly.
