The mashed potato, the twist, the limbo rock, the hustle, the macarena, the roger rabbit, the running man or the chicken noodle soup? Have you tried all of these moves? Yes, we are talking about grooving and dancing!

Dancing goes back to ancient times body movements accompanied by music were thought to possess powers. During the Middle Ages, people in Europe danced to avoid the plague while many tribes in Asia and Africa danced to ensure a bountiful harvest or for train to come and end the drought. But more than just to protect them from disease and invoke the forces of Nature, dance was also used directly to heal illness and discomfort.

Dance or Movement Therapy has been used for many centuries to improve the mental and physical well- being of a person. Today, it is also taught as a means to focus a person’s mind and body, which leads to health. Since dancing is an art, it increases self-expression and helps people connect with themselves and others. Dancing is a form of art that offers a way to explore psychological roots to overcome certain illnesses such as depression. Research have shown that dancing provide benefits that can help minimize depression’s effects.

It is known that each one of our five senses sends messages to our brain through the nerves. The brain processes these messages, after which, our body makes a reaction or execute a movement. Normally, we jump for joy when we are happy about something, and slump when we are sad. When our body does not react to the messages of the brain, we might click an emotional bomb and burst into depression.

According to research, women are most likely to suffer depression than men. Statistics have shown that more women are into dance therapy than the opposite sex. The reasons are not clear but studies suggest that on a psychological level, women are more likely to internalize and take personal responsibility for their problems. In contrast, men are more likely to turn to distracting behaviors such as substance abuse or alcoholism. Dance therapy provides an alternative way to externalize the suppressed feelings of women. In dance therapy, patients are taught to act out hidden hurts. It is believed that acting out past hurts and frustrations can help the individual come to terms with his emotional problems and thus, learn to deal with them. Women who have tried dance therapy to cope with depression found that it is uplifting and enhances their creativity. Certainly, once creativity is enhanced, problem solving comes next in handy.

Dance and movement therapy is usually led by a dance therapist. However, there are plenty of opportunities for dancing alone or in a group, even without a therapist. There are also books on the practice of dance and movement therapy available in most bookshops or over the Internet.

It is not known how dance and movement therapy might work. However, as well as the expression of feelings in movement, there might also be benefits from the physical exercise, from interacting with a group and from listening to music.

Although Dance Therapy is still a fairly new practice, it is known that it can provide an emotional release for pent-up, repressed feelings and, as a result, the patient may be sent on the road to improved mental health. With all its moving, touching, twisting, and turning, dancing provides more than the daily dose of healthy physical activity. This art form also keeps the mind sharp and helps ward-off depression.

Most women fear that as they age and the hormone levels drop, so too will their enjoyment of, and oftentimes desire for sex.

Fortunately, while diminishing hormones and sex may happen in the same breath, the latest research indicates that sexual desire has less to do with these changes than it does with lifestyle and other women’s sexual health factors, at least some of which are under a woman’s direct control.

According to reports from a group of distinguished European sex experts in the first ever supplement to The Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society, the findings have helped healthcare professionals discard the notion that sexual difficulties occurring close to menopause are either biologic or physiologic.

The new research was part of a series of studies conducted on female sexual dysfunction by the department of clinical psychiatry and psychotherapy at Hanover Medical School in Hanover, Germany. As part of the overall project, 102 women aged 20 to “45 plus” answered 165 questions designed to flush out determinants of female sexual satisfaction.

Specifically, researchers hoped to determine satisfaction with sex life in general, sexual satisfaction and orgasm during intercourse, petting, masturbation, attitudes towards sexuality, quality of partnership, and women’s sexual health myths.

Based on the study, there appeared to be no differences with respect to frequency of sexual intercourse or the desire for sexual activity not involving intercourse among the differing age groups. Age did not make a difference in regard to frequency of orgasm or in sexual satisfaction ratings with their partners. For example, 29% of women up to age 45 reported having orgasms “very often,” compared with 26% of women over age 45.

Even more dramatic was that while 41% of women over age 45 reported having orgasms “often,” only 29% of younger women reported having orgasm “often.”

Among the few differences in the groups: Women over 45 reported having fewer orgasms during non-intercourse sexual activity or during masturbation. Both groups of women reported a dual dimension necessary for successful lovemaking that included having both feelings of emotional closeness to their partner and satisfactory physical experiences.

After comparing all the answers from both older and younger women, as well as from women who reported sexual problems and those who did not, researchers concluded that the single most influential factor with regard to women’s sexual health satisfaction via intercourse was the quality of the partnership, in particular the quality of mutual respect, which then becomes of greater importance as a woman ages.

After comparing these study results to earlier and ongoing findings, the researchers concluded that the basis of any sexual problems that did occur at midlife could not be drawn from menopause status or age alone. Instead, life stressors, contextual factors, past sexuality, and mental health problems are more significant predictors of midlife on women’s sexual health interest than menopause status itself.

This study was just one of several research papers presented in the journal on the subject of women’s sexual health dysfunction. Each one striving to shed much needed light on a subject that some believe has been hidden in the shadows too long.

Women At Risk Of Heart Stroke Due To Panic Attack

When you feel like your beginning to breathe very rapidly and complain that your heart is jumping around in your chest, you may be experiencing panic attack. Such rapid pulse and shortness of breath of a panic attack can feel like a heart attack, and may signal a brewing heart trouble, a study of more than 3,000 older women reveals. Episodes of panic attack are frightening and may occur at random or after a person is exposed to various events that may trigger the condition.

Based on the study, women who reported at least one full-blown panic attack during a six-month period were three times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke over the next five years than women who didn’t report a panic attack. After taking into account other risk factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, inactivity and depression, researchers have also found out that emotional and mental health issues chracterized by fear, hostility, and anxiety which have been linked to previous research on heart problems, said study co-author Dr. Jordan Smoller of Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital.

“Postmenopausal women who are experiencing panic attacks may be a subgroup with elevated risk,” Smoller said. She added that monitoring the health condition of postmenopausal women is critical to the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Monday’s Archives of General Psychiatry published the study which wasn’t designed to explain the link but speculated that a panic attack may trigger heart rhythm problems or that stress hormones released during an attack may harm the heart.

Susie Rissler, 51, of Terre Haute, Indiana, wasn’t a bit surprised by the study. She’s been a panic attack sufferer since childhood who had already experienced three mini-strokes. “You feel like the whole world is caving in,” Rissler said of her panic attacks, which can include symptoms like racing heartbeat and chest pains. “I’ve had shaking, sweating, curling up in a ball totally afraid to even look around. Panic attacks can really destroy a person in a lot of different ways,” she said.

According to Smoller, some of the reported panic symptoms such as racing heart, chest pain or shortness of breath, experienced as a panic attack, may have been heart problems in disguise and may have been caused by an undiagnosed heart problem. “One study doesn’t settle a question,” he cautioned. Smoller said that the number of events seen in this sample was still relatively small.

From 1997-2000, the study enrolled 3,243 women and followed them for five years. Forty-one in the analysis had a heart attack or death from a heart problem. An additional 40 had strokes. According to Dr. Joann Manson of Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital who is not part of the team, though the weakness of the study may be its reliance on the women’s memories, rather than doctors’ diagnoses, it’s more likely that the findings point to a real connection between panic and heart problems.

“It does tie together very well with what we know about the biology and physiology of the stress hormones,” Manson said. “I think it does suggest that this is something to discuss with your doctor, ” Manson said.

Oftentimes, women require more medical attention than men since most female human beings normally give birth at least once in their lifetime. Unlike men, women are more inclined to feel other ailments, and not just during a high-risk pregnancy. During the time of their pregnancy, a woman’s health is so important since any health problem may cause several complications. A woman should not think of what others think of them. Rather, a woman should think of her own good and the good of their newborn child. It is a fact that ideas are based on the expectations and demands of society. But a woman should be true and individualistic if she truly wants to fund liberty and happiness. Every woman’s body is different from the rest, that is why different kinds of birth control devices and products were created. What works for one may not work for the other, and vice versa. The choice will depend on a lot of different things, like their health, personal preference, frequency of sexual encounters, number of sexual partners, and the desire to give birth and have children in the future. Here are some of the most commonly used female birth control method:

1.Sexual abstinence. If one does not engage in sexual activities, there is no way for a sperm to reach a woman’s egg cell. The best thing about abstinence is that it doesn’t cost anything, and it is a sure-fire way of avoiding sexually transmitted diseases (STD). The only difficult thing about it is that it may be difficult for some people to completely abstain from sex. Abstinence poses no risk, nor does it give a person any harmful side effects. It is deemed the most effective birth control method.

2.Sexual outercourse. It involves having sexual stimulation without having the penis penetrate the vagina. This method may be difficult to administer as couples may not be able to stop themselves from engaging in vaginal intercourse. It poses a slight risk of acquiring STDs as these can be transmitted through oral and anal intercourse. There is also a possibility of accidentally getting pregnant if semen is spilled on the vulva.

3.The barrier method. This method includes spermicides, the female condom, diaphragms, and cervical caps.

a)Spermicides. These come in gels, sprays, foam, suppository, or tablet form. These spermicides contain chemicals that kill sperm. It is applied deep into the vagina and should be administered ten minutes before engaging in sex. Spermicides may be bought over-the-counter and is available almost anywhere. Some users may experience irritation, develop rashes, or set off allergies if their skin disagrees with the chemicals. This kind of contraceptive will not protect its users from STDs.

b)Female condom. It is a thin sheath of latex fitted inside a woman’s vagina. It aims to contain the man’s sperm cells within the female condom so it doesn’t reach the egg cell. It is easily accessible in any drugstore. The downside to this product is that it lessens the sensation during sex, and like the male condom, there is a possibility that the latex might break. The female condom needs to be replaced after every intercourse, are more costly than regular male condoms, and offer less protection from STD as compared to the male condom.

c)Diaphragms. It is a rubber disk that is used to cover the cervix to prevent sperm from entering the uterus. It is inserted six hours before the intercourse, and needs to left in the vagina six hours after the last intercourse. It is messy to apply and may be difficult to insert for some women. Using diaphragms were said t increase risks of having bladder and urinary tract infection. It may also cause allergic reactions, and for the user to develop smelly vaginal discharge when left inside for more than 24 hours.

4.Hormonal method. These are designed to alter a woman’s hormonal level to make the uterine environment non-conducive for fertilization and implantation. These include:

a)The pill. This is a synthetic pill aimed to suppress ovulation by using the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. It needs to be taken daily for full effectivity. There is a tendency, though, for women to forget taking the daily pill. This does not protect its user from STDs, and is only available through prescription as it has many side effects.

b)Injectables. These are progestin based medications injected into the buttocks or arm of a user every three months to suppress ovulation. It requires no daily routine and is highly reversible. Like the contraceptive pill, it does not protect from sexually transmitted diseases, and has a list of different side effects.

Choosing the best birth control method is not a matter of picking a method out of a pot and wishing it would work for you. It is important and will affect your health. Consult your health care provider before using any contraceptive to ensure that you’re not putting yourself in danger.

Many aromatherapists, and natural health professionals for that matter, consider the overall mental and emotional condition to be of primary importance in creating an appearance of fitness and beauty. Many citrus and floral oils are used for this reason Neroli, distilled from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, is an often used example. Others are Jasmine, Sandalwood (very popular in Men’s skin care), Geranium and Ylang Ylang.

Essential oils, be they for direct effects on skin metabolism, or for the overall state of wellness of the user, will be diluted in a carrier oil, sometimes known as a base oil. It is important to note that diluting the oils will often actually enhance their effects; essential oils are often too strong to be used directly, and many studies have shown increased efficacy in dilutions down to 1% or less of the total formula. The carrier oils serve several other functions as well; they “carry” the essential oils into the skin, increasing their total absorption. They also nourish the middle and lower layers of the skin with essential fatty acids or EFA’s compounds now considered critical to the health of all living tissues. Further, some carrier oils have vitamin analogs which assist in skin regeneration and repair.

Some of the carrier oils often found in skin formulations include Hazelnut, Rosehip seed, and Evening Primrose. Hazelnut is a very gentle oil with little aroma of it’s own, and being suitable for virtually all skin types, it use used in a vast number of blends as the primary carrier. To this, Rosehip seed oil is added for it’s concentration of triple-unsaturated fatty acids, and it’s natural trans-retinoic acid; a vitamin-A compound similar in effects to Retin-A without drying side effects. Evening Primrose is often also included in lower concentrations for it’s high levels of GLA or gamma-linolenic acid, and is considered important in cases of eczema and skin showing signs of premature aging.

Making your own blends with these ingredients is truly a fun and rewarding experience you only need a bottle to mix them in, and some means of counting out drops of essential oil. An eye dropper works wonderfully, and graduated plastic pipettes are readily available. A basic blend to begin with, which is designed for overall health of the skin, is made thusly: to one ounce of Hazelnut Oil, add fifteen drops Thyme Linalool, fifteen drops Rosemary Verbenone, fifteen drops Neroli (or a high-quality Petitgrain if you prefer it is much less expensive with many of the same properties), and fifteen drops Spike Lavender (a Lavender with strong antiseptic qualities a little more ‘medicinal’ than the sweeter True lavender). This blend was originally formulated to clear up oily skin, but is now used to support normal skin in daily application.

If your skin has been chemically damaged, is overly-sensitive, or otherwise ‘weakened’ with broken capillaries, try this mixture, applying frequently: For each ounce of base oil, use three parts Hazelnut, one part Rosehip Seed, and one part Evening Primrose. Add the following essential oils: fifteen drops Moroccan Chamomile, fifteen drops Helichrysum, fifteen drops true Lavender, and fifteen drops Roman Chamomile. The Helichrysum, Lavender and Rosehip seed will enhance the skin’s own natural metabolism, and the addition of the Chamomiles will greatly reduce inflammation that is found with almost all damage and/or aging.

If your skin is prone to acne, or has over-active sebaceous glands, the following blend can be of great assistance. It contains regenerative, antiseptic, and cleansing oils. Simply use Hazelnut as the base, and to each ounce include fifteen drops of Green Myrtle or Inula graveolens, fifteen drops Eucalyptus dives (because of the ketones in this oil, it should not be used if pregnant or under 10 years of age but is otherwise considered safe), fifteen drops Spike Lavender, and fifteen drops Rosemary verbenone.

If your skin doesn’t have particular damage to it, but appears lifeless due to exhaustion and/or exposure to significant amounts of pollution or environmental toxins, this is the blend for you. Use one part Rosehip Seed and 4 parts Hazelnut as the base. To each ounce, include fifteen drops Carrot Seed (also known as Wild Carrot or Queen Anne’s Lace a well known skin restorative), fifteen drops Lemon verbena (which enhances the removal of toxins from skin tissues), fifteen drops Niaouli (an all-around brilliant antiseptic oil with firming effects), and fifteen drops Rosemary verbenone (again, for it’s regenerative and stimulating effects). If you are wishing to strengthen, tighten, and firm your skin, try this dilute mixture (the concentration of essential oils is relatively low here for use near the eyes) five ounces of Hazelnut oil and one ounce of Rosehip seed oil, fifteen drops of Green Myrtle, fifteen drops of Rock Rose (a plant grown in very sun-drenched areas, excellent for gently tightening the skin). If you like, add fifteen drops of Rosemary verbenone for it’s regenerative properties, but omit if this causes sensitivity used near the eyes.

These are only a few aromatherapy skin care recipes for a woman’s natural beauty medicine chest. There are many texts available to help you create more complex blends, or one’s with your favorite aromatics. Blending your own facial and skin formulas is easy, rewarding, and in the long run, cost-effective. Using natural botanicals in a consistent, mindful manner can lead to long-lasting, noticeable natural health of your skin. Just remember with aromatherapy, essential oil concentrations should be kept low for best results pay attention to how your own body reacts and you’re sure to find the ingredients and measures most effective for you!
