Your Immune System: How It Works And How You Can Support It

| Articles | October 21, 2014

Do you know what your immune system is? The parts your immune system is made up of? How it works? Those are the things that we’ll explore in this article.

What Is Your Immune System?

Your immune system is your body’s defense system. Whenever any kind of pathogen, such as a virus, bacteria, or such, enters your body, it is the immune system’s job to find, destroy, and remove the pathogen. In short, the immune system is designed to keep you free from disease.

How your Immune System Works

Your immune system is divided into two parts: the innate part and the adaptive part.

The innate part of your immune system is the part of your immune system that is always there and guarding against infection or disease. It is your first line of defense.

Parts of the innate immune system include neutrophils, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Natural Killer Cells, or NKC’s, are also part of your innate immune system. They are specially able at killing cells infected with a virus, as well as cancer cells.

Your innate immune system also includes parts like your skin mucous membranes, and other parts that protect your health by blocking or keeping out pathogens.

Your adaptive immune system is the part of your system that adapts to respond to threats to your health. The adaptive part of your immune system is the reason that you generally will not get the same common cold virus or chickenpox more than once.

Your adaptive immune system is made up of two primary components: antibodies and T-cells. Each of these types is designed to recognize specific types of virus-infected cells, bacteria, or other pathogens.

Note that this is a very generalized overview of how your immune system works. For a more precise explanation, see an encyclopedia or medical textbook.

Nutrition and your immune system

There are many nutrients that play a role in your immune function. Here are just a few of them:

Glyconutrients are an important part of the immune response. Glyconutrients are used to create glycoproteins, which cover the outsides of all cells in your body. These glycoproteins are used by immune system cells (among others) for recognizing pathogens.

Phytonutrients have been found by science to be very helpful in fighting disease. Scientists are not certain whether phytonutrients are actually used by your body, if they have a direct effect on disease, or both.

Colostrum taken as a supplement can help boost the immune system.

Deficiencies in vitamin C can cause poor immunity.

Hopefully this article has given you at least a slightly better understanding of your immune system, and how it works. Make the effort today to support your immune system with proper diet and supplements you won’t be sorry!

Your Health And Air Cleaners

| Articles | October 20, 2014

There are many benefits to using air cleaners. Nowadays air cleaners are quite affordable and every home should have one particularly if you live in large cities where the pollution levels are quite bad.

If you or your family members are suffering from allergies, an air cleaner is a necessity in your home. The reason being an air cleaner can help to remove allergens in the air by filtering and recycling the air thereby reducing the possibility of allergy attacks.

If you are suffering from asthma or sinus problems, an air cleaner will really help you. An air cleaner will dramatically reduce the amount of dust and debris in the air. Other particles that irritate the lung are also removed thereby reducing the rate of asthma attacks. A doctor recommended this to me since he told me for asthmatic patients to reduce the chance of asthma attacks, I should get an air cleaner. Really, if you considered the small price you pay for an air cleaner versus your health, I think it is a worthwhile investment.

An air cleaner can also reduce the number of air-borne germs. It can used particularly useful for those with a weak immune system who are prone to illness and other diseases. For babies and young toddlers, it is equally useful since their immune system is not developed fully yet.

There are various types of air cleaners available on the market these days that do not cost a lot of money. Some air cleaners require you to replace the air filter periodically. The newer models of air cleaners use what’s known as an ionic system. An ionic system does not need to replace the air filter but instead by regularly washing the air filter similar to your air-conditioner. In my opinion, an ionic air cleaner is a better choice since you can save a bit of money in buying replacement air filters.

Air cleaners are well worth your investment if you consider your health or your family health is more important than anything. An air cleaner can cut down the chances of a allergy attack or an asthma attack. If you are living in an urban city, chances are the air is a lot more polluted than you think. I got a shock when I saw how dirty the air filter was after a period of time. More than anything, I have cut down the number of times I visit the doctor for my asthma. So what are you waiting for? Go get yourself an air cleaner today.

Your Guide To Managing Your High Blood Pressure

| Articles | October 19, 2014

What Is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the pressure of blood in contact with the walls of the arteries. It is registered as two numbers, as the heart beats (the systolic pressure) over as the heart relaxes between beats (the diastolic pressure). This process of assigning number is written one above or before the other, with the systolic number on top and the diastolic number on the bottom. Here is an example, 120/80 millimeters of mercury (mmHg)) is stated orally as 120 over 80. Regular blood pressure is less than 120 mmHg systolic and less than 80 mmHg diastolic.

High Blood Pressure(HBP)

High blood pressure is an disease that step-ups your opportunity for getting heart disease, kidney disease or having a stroke. HBP is particularly life-threatening because it sometimes has no warning signs or symptoms. Irrespective of race, age, or gender, anybody can get high blood pressure. It is approximated that one in every four adults has high blood pressure. If high blood pressure springs up, it normally goes a lifetime. You can stop and manage high blood pressure by choosing action.

Detection

Everyone should be having your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. Nearly all physicians will determine a person with high blood pressure with two or more readings that are taken on different times. An unchanging blood pressure reading of 140/90 mmHg or higher is regarded as high blood pressure, the other term is hypertension.

A few people have high blood pressure just when they travel to the physician’s office, it is called white-coat hypertension. If your physician sees this, you may be expected to record your blood pressure at home or expected to put on a device known as an ambulatory blood pressure monitor. This device is normally worn for 1 day and can take blood pressure every 30 minutes.

Prevention

You can take steps to stop high blood pressure by embracing a healthy way of life. These steps include keeping a healthy weight; staying physically energetic; conforming to a healthy diet plan. That stresses fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy foods; selecting and cooking foods with less salt and sodium. And if you drink alcoholic beverages, drinking in moderation.

Treatment

You should find it crucial to take steps to maintain your blood pressure. The treatment end is blood pressure below 140/90 and lower for individuals with other conditions, like diabetes and kidney disease. Following healthy lifestyle ways is an efficient first step in both forbidding and mastering high blood pressure. If lifestyle modifications are not efficient in retaining your pressure controlled, it may be inevitable to add blood pressure medications.

Learn about blood pressure lowering lifestyle habits such as:

1. Quit Smoking

2. Reduce Salt and Sodium in Your Diet

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight

4. Follow a Healthy Eating Pattern

5. Limit Alcohol Intake

6. Be Physically Active

It is all up to you to take this silent killer and change your ways or pay the consequence.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Enema

| Articles | October 18, 2014

The enema was originally conceived as a sort of medical procedure, though one that was not entirely pleasant to undergo. Digestive discomfort and constipation were the primary problems that the procedure was designed to deal with, though there may be other conditions that require the use of one. Since then, thanks to the spreading availability of ways to administer an enema outside of a medical setting, they have been used in a number of ways that the original inventor likely did not intend. It is doubtful that the man responsible for the enema even conceived of some of the more “intimate” uses his creation might have, such as being a sexual health supplement.

The mechanics of an enema involve introducing a liquid into the rectum and colon via the anus. Originally conceived as a medical procedure, there can be any number of reasons why people would enjoy it being used as a sexual health supplement. The reasons can range from the male enjoying how it stimulates the prostate gland to virtually anyone somehow finding pleasure in the prospect of having an assortment of liquids pumped into their body through an orifice that traditionally goes the other way around. Still others find that an enema can be a good means of preparation before partaking of anal intercourse, as a means of removing fecal matter and minimizing the chances of infection. Finally, others find it to trigger mild levels of dominance and submission in participants, making it a possible sexual health supplement for people who like that sort of thing.

As a form of dominance-submission play, the use of an enema as a sexual health supplement is relatively mild and ordinary. This is particularly true if one realizes that there are alternatives out there that are much, much less in line with the normal thing. Regardless, the increasing use of enemas as a part of some couple’s sexual escapades has prompted the “sex toys” market to sell out home enema kits, along with a number of similar products. These products can have a wide range of types, with some looking almost like the medical tools used for the procedure, while others have decided to add a little “spice” to the design, without sacrificing the functionality. There is a wide variety of liquids that can be used in an enema. The most obvious choice would be water, but some couples might find that to be too mundane for their purposes. Some of them use liquids similar to water, such as alcohol or coffee (most experts find that organic, ground coffee works better than the instant sort), while others may use more exotic liquids in their enemas. For a number of couples, the use of an enema is less a matter of what liquid is being introduced into the body, and more a matter of the position of the body and the enema. Apparently, some positions have a deeper psychological impact than others, heightening the sense of pleasure that both dominants and sub missives get out of the act.

Your Diet… Is It Putting Your Health At Risk?

| Articles | October 16, 2014

Are you feeling tired, stressed, or apathetic? Did you know these are all common signs of a diet lacking nutritional value? If you are dieting, ill, or eating a fast-food diet, you should you be concerned that you and your family are getting proper nutrition from your food.

– How can you know that you are getting enough nutrition?

If you find that a day goes by and the only thing you’ve had to eat is a bagel and coffee or maybe some fast-food you will no doubt be feeling the physical effects of a lack of nutrition. Lack of mental clarity, weakness and irritability are all signs you haven’t given your body enough good food to eat.

On the other hand, if you or your children indulge in high calorie diets on a regular basis you will notice the effects of over nutrition. Weight gain and related symptoms will also zap your energy and put a strain on your body.

– Under and over nutrition. Finding balance.

Your diet is a crucial element to feeling good, strong and alert. If you’ve been suffering from a diet lacking in nutrition, or an over indulgence in nutrition, you’ll certainly be feeling the effects on your overall health – and even worse – you may be setting yourself up for more serious disease.

You obviously need calories for energy. It is vital to obtain the necessary amount of calories every day to maintain your optimum health. Individuals who do not take in the proper amount of calories because of ill health, physical disability, dieting or problems with absorption, usually begin to loose weight, lack concentration and as time passes they begin to loose the function of organs such as the reproductive system and eventually major functions of the heart and lungs.

A diet too high in calories will also put your health at risk. More common than under nutrition in developed countries like the United States, obesity puts a strain on the organs and increases the risk for health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and even cancer.

Knowing what a typical serving size of food is can help you determine if you (or a family member) are taking in the appropriate amount of calories. It is important for parents to teach children moderate eating habits to ensure good eating for life. I cannot stress this point enough!

– How nutritious is your food?

Aside from merely watching caloric intake it is important that your diet has strong nutritional value as well. You could eat an entire box of doughnuts to meet your calorie needs without having met your daily requirements for vitamins, protein, calcium and other minerals.

Choosing a diet that lacks nutrition on a regular basis will lead to a lowered resistance to illness, general weakness, and irritability. Other diet deficiencies, such as a lack of calcium, can lead to more serious disorders like osteoporosis.

While pregnant and/or lactating women, the elderly and ill individuals may have no choice but to to supplement their diet with multi vitamins, the average healthy person should attempt to get most of the nutrition they need in a normal diet that includes fruit, vegetables, protein (meat and lentils), dairy and fibre bread and cereals).

– So what about the occasional burger?

Fast-food in the diet is not harmful if it is only an occasional treat, but may show its negative effects if consumed as a major part of the diet. Educating yourself and your family on what a healthy diet is will help you and your family feel great and enjoy good health for years to come.

Your Chances of Surviving Cancer

| Articles | October 15, 2014

Understanding cancer is not difficult if we start looking at cancer from the inside. The cancer starts in the cells, and Cells can break off from a malignant tumour and start to grow in another part of the body, this is known as a secondary tumour. Cells in these tumors are abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cells grow by dividing in half, such that one cell will become two, and two become four (these new cells are called daughter cells), etc . Normally, there are very strict rules as to when a cell can grow or not.

Cells in benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Most important, benign tumors are rarely a threat to life. Cells deprived of oxygen die and decay, which is why some cancers have an odor. The term for this new blood vessel growth is angiogenesis.

Obviously as you may know already, malignant tumors are cancerous. These tumors contain cells that divide and grow without order. Malignant tumors (cancers) can spread to other tissues or organs nearby or to other parts of the body. This is called metastasis . Malignant tumors are tumors that are capable of spreading by invasion and metastasis. By definition, the term “cancer” applies only to malignant tumors.Malignant means that the disease, if not treated, can progress and lead to death. Malignant tumors are cancer. Cancer cells can invade and damage tissues and organs near the tumor. Malignant tissues can invade and damage other tissues and organs. Cancer cells can then break away from the tumour and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system, spreading the cancer to other parts of the body.

The serious part of this is that malignant tumours metastasize to other organs of the body and continue developing unlimitedly.

In the other hand Benign tumors can often be removed by surgery, and they are not likely to return. Some tumors of the testicle are benign, but most are not. Benign tumors are not usually life threatening. Benign tumors, although they may cause some health problems depending on their size and location, are not life-threatening.

Benign (noncancerous) tumors can also grow anywhere in your mouth. Benign tumors are well-differentiated —in other words, they differ only slightly in appearance and behavior from their tissue of origin. These tumors are slow growing and noninvasive, do not spread throughout the body, and will often have a fibrous tissue capsule around them.

Treatments are related to a particular cancer’s usual behavior. For a cancer that is aggressive locally (where it is first detected), local treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, and photodynamic therapy may be used. Treatment depends on the kind of treatment the patient had when first treated. If the patient had surgery alone, the patient may have surgery again or radiation therapy.

Radiation therapy destroys or damages cancer cells by targeting high energy x-rays to the tissues. Radiation therapy is usually painless and is provided in an out patient setting. Radiation is a special kind of energy carried by waves or a stream of particles originating from radioactive substances and delivered by special machines. These radioactive x-rays or gamma rays can penetrate the cell wall and damage the nucleus of the cell which prevents growth and division of cells.

Your Body Wants To Fight The Flu

| Articles | October 14, 2014

The body’s immune system is our first line of defense against attacks from germs, bacteria, and viral agents like the flu. The immune system detects these harmful invaders and begins the process of isolating and destroying them. But the immune system only works if it has the fuel that it needs.

You see, the immune system is called a “system” because it is comprised of various organs and sub systems that work together in harmony. The major parts of the immune system include:

Thymus

Spleen

Lymph system

Bone marrow

White blood cells

Antibodies

Complement system (30 specific proteins which circulate in our blood plasma).

Hormones

Each part of the immune system depends upon proper nutrition in order to be able to function at peak efficiency. If even one component of the immune system under-performs, the entire system is at risk of failing. A failed immune system leaves the body with no protection from any type of attack. That’s why HIV and AIDS are such devastating diseases.

Unfortunately, most people have diets that fail to provide even the minimum nutritional levels that our immune systems requires to do its work. And that’s one of the major reasons why this flu season may be the worst one ever. Citizens of developed countries are eating diets that are high in saturated fats and sugars and low in vitamins and minerals. Many citizens of underdeveloped nations are suffering from malnutrition and even starvation. Whether the immune system is affected by too much of the wrong food, or not enough of any food is not what’s important right now. What is important is that most people’s immune systems are ill prepared to ward off this latest flu menace.

But you don’t have to let your immune system fail you when you need it the most. You have options.

You can give your body’s immune system exactly what it needs to operate a peak efficiency, and you can do it without having to eat a variety of special foods or ingesting handfuls of vitamins and minerals. All you need to do is Winterize your body by taking just one capsule per day.

Your Body Is An Engine

| Articles | October 13, 2014

Growing up around surface coal mining and machines with engines, I learned a lot about how engines work and the basics that they need. Now today learning about nutrition I find some similarities. Stay with me here. It will make sense, I hope. The needs of your body are similar to the needs of the engine in your car. These needs are Fuel, Air, and Spark. By the way, you must have realized by now that I am a very simple minded person with a very simple mind. To simplify, this article I will address just one of these needs. Fuel

Compare this: Your car engine needs fuel. So does your body.

The gasoline you put in your car has to be clean with no pollutants. If it is contaminated you will experience symptoms. Lack of power especially when needed like going up a hill, spit sputter and backfiring, your engines way of saying “Help!!” I am not getting the nutrients I need and it may even stop running all together. (Bad, very Bad if this is your body.) To fix the symptoms, all that is needed (if you do this soon enough) is to purge the engine of the impurities and make sure that the new fuel is clean and proper.

Your body is no different, if what you eat is contaminated you will experience the symptoms of being tired, no power, you can also spit, sputter (vomit), and backfire (diarrhea). Again the cure is as easy as giving the body the clean and proper foods it needs. AHH, but now you may ask what are the proper foods.

Remember when you were taught that there were four basic food groups? We were instructed to eat from all four-food groups to get a balanced meal.

1. Dairy

2. Meat

3. Grain

4. Fruits and vegetables. Sounds easy EXCEPT

YOUR DIET CAN AND DOES CAUSE ILLNESS. SAY WHAT? TED

Have you ever suffered from one of the following? Indigestion, heartburn, tiredness, headaches, mood swings, aching joints, constipation, allergies, hypoglycemia, diabetes, high blood pressure, yeast overgrowth, just to name a few.

The problem may not be just the foods you are eating, but what Foods you are Mixing together that is causing a TOXIC CONDITION in the body, especially in the digestive tract.

OH, now you have really done it. This is sounding too confusing.

Learning about Nutrition is an in-depth study, but you can learn the basic do’s and don’ts.

Here is one easy example, Fruits: The rule for fruit is to eat it alone or leave it alone.

Don’t mix with other food groups.

I was taught very young that if you aren’t learning you are dying. Is it worth the effort??

When you first get up in the morning, are you still tired? Look in a full body mirror, look close, do you like what you see? Is your life abundant and Healthy?

Your Body, the Missing Link to Knowing Your Creator

In a world full of sacred texts and differing opinions, how do you know which one is correct? And it doesn’t just stop there with choosing the correct sacred text. You can have one sacred text and hundreds of interpretations on how it is supposed to be followed, let alone all the other sacred texts.

So, which text is right and how is it really supposed to be followed? Well, this article has nothing to do with that question. Instead, it deals with something that is almost always over looked, but a lot closer to home. It’s your physical body.

There is a raging war about which sacred text is the right one and how it is really supposed to be followed, but I don’t think any are claiming that our bodies are not the creations of God. Please forgive the trespass if God is not the word you use for your higher power. For the convenience of writing this article, when you see the word God or other similar words, please substitute the appropriate word to provide meaning to you.

Think about the vulnerability of text. It can be changed, manipulated, and interpreted in many ways, but how many human forgeries do we have out of the 6 billion people on the planet? How many humans do we have that are in horses, cats, or dogs bodies? How about trees that are humans? From my count, I come up with zero. There is something sacred about the human body.

I agree that it is your soul, life force, spirit, etc, that makes the human body alive and magical, but why does this magic only show up in the human body? Animals and plants are alive but they are different. Obviously God choose the human form for a specific reason.

Our bodies are a gift from God while we are alive on this planet. All that we experience happens through our bodies. You have it your whole life and it is not like you can go down to the store and pick up a new one. What you think, eat, and do, affects your body which then affects what you experience.

The part of the world you are born into greatly influences the type of religions and sacred texts you will be exposed to. The one thing, however, that is constant across the world, is the human body. There is no illusion that it comes from God and that there are laws in place that affect the body. These laws are universal and affect the body independently of the religion the person follows.

God gave us all bodies and set down laws that govern these bodies. Now the human body is mostly the same, but there are differences in sizes, shapes, skin color, etc. Do you think that is a mistake? God got it wrong? Is everyone supposed to be the same and his manufacturing process is off?

I don’t think so. We were given our specific body by God for a specific reason. Now, he also put in place the laws on how the body is to be used. Certain things make the body run great and other things are destructive to the body. Why is that? Why choose only the human body, make sure everyone gets one that is very similar, and then have laws about what make it work great, what makes it work poorly, or what kills it?

Now, I am not knocking sacred text in any manner or under shadowing their importance. I am just bringing to light that your body is without a doubt, 100% authentic from God, and it has specific laws on how it should be treated. I urge you to build the habits that sustain and make your body thrive.

Habits such as proper rest, exercise, eating right, and proper mental food are universal principles that affect the body in a positive manner. Of course anything taken to excess or abused can be damaging. God gave you your body with an internal guidance system to follow. Finding out the specifics of what works best for your body is a quest that will surely bring you closer to what God designed for your life. I wish you well on your quest where ever it may take you.

Your BMI-Body Mass Index May Not Be Accurate If You Are An Asian Or African

| Articles | October 11, 2014

Everyone knows that carrying extra body fat is a potential time bomb by increasing the risks of getting heart diseases, stroke and certain types of cancers. These are potential killer diseases. By keeping your body fat down, these diseases may be avoided and even prevented.

One of the most popular methods of measuring whether one is overweight is by using the Body Mass Index or BMI calculation. The formula for calculating BMI is:-

Body weight in kilograms (pounds) divided by height in metres (ft) squared.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a BMI measurement above 25 indicates that a person is overweight and a BMI measurement over 30 indicates that he is obese.

However, is this calculation accurate? The BMI recommendation by WHO was based on studies done largely on Caucasians. Thus the BMI recommendation by WHO may be an accurate indication of obesity on an average Caucasian. There are now findings to suggest that people of Asian and African origins have a significantly higher percentage of body fat compared to Caucasians although they may look slimmer than their Caucasian counterparts. Therein lays the danger. If you are an Asian or an African, you may look slim but may carry extra body fat of which you are oblivious to.

As a fitness personal trainer, it is not uncommon that when I measure body fat of my Asian clients who do not look fat physically, their body fat ratio are high.

According to Dr Mabel Yap, Deputy Director of the Department of Nutrition, Ministry of Health, Singapore, ethnic differences in BMI values have important public health implications as they imply that cut-off points for obesity should be lower or higher in different ethnic groups. “Lowering the cut-off point from 30 to 27 in Singapore, for example, would double the prevalence of obesity,” she said.

In a study, the School of Physical Education of the National Institute of Education, Singapore and Wageningen University of Netherlands found that body built of a person does affect the BMI calculation of various ethnic groups. This result was further confirmed by other studies in Thailand and Indonesia.

As commonly known, BMI calculation is not accurate for muscular people (muscles are heavier than fat) and now, it may also not be accurate across the board for all ethnic groups. For a start, Asians and Africans may want to define their BMI results as being overweight if it is above 23 and obese if above 27.
