How to be Safe When your Local Home Repairman Do Service Calls

| Articles | July 20, 2012

So you’ve called a repairman and you are expecting him to come to your house and fix your appliance. Though he may be recommended by your friend or by the company where you bought the appliance, the person that will walk into your house is basically a stranger. So even though he’s expected, you still need to ensure your safety before allowing him to enter your door. Here are some steps you can follow to stay safe before letting the local home repairman into your house or apartment.

1.Ask for the repairman’s physical description.

If the handyman is sent by the manufacturer or the store where you bought the appliance, ask the dispatcher to give you a physical description of the person.

2.Ask for the handyman’s photo identification.

Before allowing the handyman inside your house, ask for his photo identification first. If he fails to present such, then do not let that stranger enter your door.

3.Keep an eye on the repairman.

Do not let the handyman roam around your house without your supervision and as much as possible, stay with him as long as he’s in your house.

4.Keep your telephone on hand.

If you need to walk around, make sure to bring your telephone with you so you can immediately call the authority or anyone else in case a problem arises.

5. Let your neighbor know that a repairman is coming to your house.

If your neighbor is aware that you are expecting someone, then he or she can help you when there’s a problem.

6.Do not display your valuables.

Valuables like expensive jewelry, laptop computers, and cash must be put away.

7.Request for a written or printed receipt.

Once the work is complete, tell the repairman to provide you with a written receipt and keep it in your file.

8.Let the company know all the issues you have with the repairman.

If you have any problem with the handyman such as rudeness or unprofessional actions, make sure to contact the company.

9.Be sure that that the handyman brings all his tools.

Before the repairman leaves, check if he brings all his tools so there’s no reason for him to return.

10.Don’t forget to lock your door as soon as the handyman leaves.

Bear in mind that jobs like appliance repair needs not only a professional but also a reliable person. So it pays to hire someone you know or a local home repairman that’s sent by the manufacturer of the appliance. You can also hire someone from a professional appliance repair company. Majority of the professional appliance handymen can repair wide range of household appliances. They usually have the know-how that’s needed for the repair job.

You can also hire those repairmen who have been in the industry for years now because they may have already serviced almost every appliance. They also have the experience and expertise needed to make your home appliance working again. So whenever your fridge, dishwasher, dryer, or oven needs to be fixed, especially if the problem is in the electrical wiring, might as well call a professional.

While DIY repairs can save you bucks, hiring the pros help you save more in the long run because most of the time they can prevent major appliance problem by merely making minor repairs. Just don’t forget to take some precautions before letting the local home repairman into your house.
